The Petter AB1 Diesel Engine
I purchased this engine from ebay in April 2006. I was told that this engine was from a rotivator, and in a working order (however he hadn't started it).
When I first got the engine I eventually worked out how to start it (didn't have any instructions), however it only ran for about 3 seconds then stopped, so I decided to first clean the engine and then try to find out what the problem was.
I started off by removing the fuel tank and engine cowling, I then washed all the oil and grime off it with a pressure washer (big thanks to Ben Hopper who let me borrow his). After this I cleaned out the fuel tank; which was full of all sorts of rusty brown sludge. I tried to clean the fuel filter by washing it in petrol (fuel filters should be renewed, and not cleaned - clean at your own risk!).
After cleaning the tank and filter I thought that it would be a good idea to check the fuel injector. (I did take a photo of the injector spraying a mist of high pressure diesel, but the memory card in the camera died)
I also lost the pictures of what the engine looked like after it had been pressure washed. There wasn't much paint left on it, and I therefore decided it would be a good idea if I left the engine bare aluminium.
